I’m an unabashed Brett Favre fan. Let’s just get that our of the way right now. As such, I’m a Minnesota Vikings fan this year. Bandwagon? Shutup.
Much to my dismay, after the Vikings slapped around the Cowboys, I started hearing things like, “I can’t believe they ran up the score at the end like that!” I’ve now read four different sports stories about it. Seriously? Let me break this down as simply as I can. There is no running up the score in professional football. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no such thing as running up the score anywhere. I’m so tired of the namby pamby philosophy that it’s not OK to kick ass. I hope my future kid’s T-ball team goes 11-0 with a 12 score average margin of victory.
Getting back to the game… the controversy came at the two minute warning in the fourth quarter, when the Vikings already had the game won 27-3 (and around the time that Gerald Sensabaugh finally realized that Favre had thrown a pass to Sidney Rice for a touchdown in the first quarter). The Vikings ran three straight times, and were at 4th down and 3 yards to go. Favre dumped the ball to Visanthe Shiancoe out of play action for a touchdown–Favre’s fourth of the game. After the play, Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking was so offended that he charged the Minnesota sideline to yell at Favre. What’s the problem with this? Number one, Favre didn’t call the play–Childress and Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell did. Number two, there’s a lot of much larger men than you on that sideline, Mr. Brooking. You’re lucky to have gotten out alive.
The whole week leading up to this game, all I heard was, “The Cowboys are gonna roll over the Vikings”, and, “The Vikings shouldn’t even show up”. It’s amazing to me that now that the Vikings had the audacity to not only show up, but to beat the snot out of the ‘Boys, the best outlet for the Cowboys frustration comes as a wimpy complaint of, “WAH! WAH! That’s not fair! They already won, why’d they have to do what they’re paid to do and continue to play for the whole 60 minutes? We gave up after 50, why didn’t they? WAH!” Pathetic.
I have a tiny tip for Keith Brooking and the rest of the Cowboys who were so hurt by this despicable gesture that the Vikings displayed. How about you guys play some defense? Don’t you guys get paid like millions of dollars to do that? If you didn’t want Shiancoe to get open, how about you cover him? If you didn’t want him to catch the ball, maybe you should have intercepted it. Oh, wait… that’s right, you couldn’t, which is incidentally why the Vikings scored. That’s probably also a big reason that the Cowboys lost the game. Maybe?
One last bit of advice for the Cowboys and their fans that are so pissed off at Brett Favre, and the Vikings. Go join the Packers, so you can have some cheese with that whine.
